Major Lumix Firmware Update Announced for S1II, S1RII & S1IIE – Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Panasonic has unveiled a free firmware update for the Lumix S1II, S1RII, and S1IIE, set for release 24th June 2025 — and it’s packed with game-changing features.

S1RII Gets a Massive Resolution Boost

With Firmware Version 1.2, the S1RII gains a big leap in video resolution:

• 7.2K Open Gate at 25fps (NTSC)

• 8.1K Open Gate at 24fps (PAL)

Previously capped at 6.4K, this higher resolution allows for:

• Greater cropping flexibility in post

• Multi-aspect workflows

• Confident wide 3:2 shooting with reframing options

Bonus: Autofocus performance remains unchanged in these high-res modes.

RAW Video Output – More Options

The S1RII now supports RAW video output via HDMI in both 8.1K and 7.2K, but requires a compatible external recorder.

Model comparison:

• S1RII:

  • 8.1K Open Gate at 24fps

  • 7.2K Open Gate at 25/30fps

• S1II / S1IIE:

  • Up to 6K 3:2 at 30fps

• S1II advantage:

  • 5.7K RAW at 60fps with no crop

ARRI Log C3 Comes to Full-Frame Lumix

For the first time ever, you can shoot ARRI Log C3 on a full-frame Lumix camera — available on all three models with the purchase of the DMW-SFU3 upgrade key (~£180 UK / ~$160 US).

• Seamless colour matching with ARRI workflows

• Same dynamic range as V-Log but with more grading flexibility

• Boosts production value and pro-level output

S1RII Gains Pro Features from S1II & S1IIE

Now includes:

• Urban Sports Recognition AF modes

• Direct SSD backups from SD/CFexpress cards

• UVC support for plug-and-play live streaming

1. Expanded Aspect Ratio Markers

• 17 aspect ratios (up from 10)

• Show up to 3 markers simultaneously

• Change marker colours for better visibility

Great for Open Gate shooting — preview 9:16, 16:9, 4:3 all at once.

2. AF Frame Colour Options

• Choose from 10 focus box colours

• Improves visibility in bright or busy scenes

3. Focus Stacking (In-Camera)

• Combines multiple frames at different focus points in-camera

• Works only with electronic shutter

• Watch for flicker with artificial light

4. Capture One Support

• WiFi/wired LAN data transfer

• Improved tethered shooting workflows

5. Focus Ring as Control Ring

• Assign custom functions to focus ring on:

  • 20-60mm kit lens

  • 50mm F1.4 S Pro

  • 24-105mm F4

• Reverse manual focus direction if desired

Final Thoughts

This is a massive update for video shooters and hybrid creators. With high-res RAW output, ARRI Log, UI improvements, and expanded lens control, the S1RII in particular becomes a far more powerful video tool.
